Happy Independence Day!!
Voice 1:”Getting early in the morning, take a bath just to go and watch the flag-hoisting twice a year. Its all bullshit”
Voice2:”Atleast ek din to yaad kar liya kar desh ko..aur ye kya aaj ke din english songs laga rakhe hain..kuchh patriotic song suno.”
Voice1:”i didn’t go for the flag hoisting that doesn’t mean i am not concerned for my country..and it doesn’t show that u are patriotic if you listen patriotic songs on the Independence Day”
Voice2:”haan ..tumlog to GRE de kar baahar jaaoge ..yahan to hum rehenge apne desh ke liye kaam karenge”
This was the conversation between two juniors living next to my room on the morning of 60th Independence Day, which was overheard by me.
Out of 1200 students in an institute, only about 100(i.e only about 8%) are present for the unfurling of the flag by the director.And when the director asks “how many are from the first year and how many are from fourth year”..You can see a wide difference in the number of students from the most junior and the most senior. Just 8-9 were from fourth year. What is the reason for this??
And when you pose the question to the not present-ones, they all have a common reply - “I care for my nation. I will work for my nation and that is patriotism and going to just attend the I-Day Ceremony is just a wastage of time and not patriotism”.But the real reason is that people are too lazy.If they can’t get up one day to give respect to their national flag and those who sacrificed their lives for getting freedom from the clutches of the foreigners, what is the surity that they will be present when the nation needs them.
I know most of the young generation people are of the view that attending the flag-hoisting to show your patriotic feelings for your motherland is a bullshit.But I think Independence Day is a special day when all the Indians worldwide should remember the sacrifices made by a few great men who fought for the freedom that we enjoy today. It is a day to give respect to your National Flag. All the citizens must at least dedicate this day to the nation as we are busy with our lives for all other 364 days of the year. We should not treat this day as just another holiday.

err i beg to differ...

If one wishes to do so.. one can do it 24*7*365. Respect as i know doesnt mean standing straight and saluting in front of a crowd.. it is related more to one's heart.
But I think Independence Day is a special day when all the Indians worldwide should remember the sacrifices made by a few great men who fought for the freedom that we enjoy today.
i completely agree with you on this point. But my question is, why a ritual of assembling, singing national anthem, saluting and then having sweets an ideal one to commemorate our freedom fighters ?
Do you think of gandhi, nehru, bose, bhagat singh et al when you are singing and saluting the flag ? i guess there are more effective ways of commemorating them than merely attending a ritual.. like you can read a wonderful book on freedom fight, a documentary on bose , films of gandhi,bhagat singh etc etc.. atleast this way you show your respect for them by knowing more about their lives and values they stood for.. and an excellent way of showing respect to them would be to try and imbibe some of their values in yourself.
But merely singing songs and saluting the flag seems like a BLAND ritual to me.

I dont think so. It works like this.. one fine day you see a horde of sheep go one way. everybody joins the horde and so do you. But after blindlessly following the horde for sometime you become more mature and question yourself the reason behind your following the horde. You dont find any. So you stay back.. and stop following the horde.
It is that simple..

" ..this quiz was conducted by NDTV for our respected MP's....This is very shameful for a nation. Every citizen of a nation must have awareness about the past history of it so that these pass through the future generations and doesn't get lost...The culture and the history are the assets of a country..I agree this knowledge can be gained by reading books but if people care and if they can take out time for reading books or watching documentaries. Atleast if they attend these so-called rituals twice a year, they will see the flag and know what is the color of our flag or hear the speeches made, they can atleast get aware of other facts about their nation and the way the nation attained its freedom. Otherwise one day these rituals would also stop and it may happen that ppl would also forget that we got freedom from the clutches of a foreign nation because of the efforts of some great ppl and we even have a national flag. Atleast as a day is marked for the celebration, childer are curious and query the elders as to whats the reason behind these celebrations..

yeah this will be a god start to try and improve patriotic feelings. But much more needs to be done..

yup u r right many of us in the present generation do not give much thought to these celebration but as i have already told the reasons in a reply to deepu's comments about the importance of these celebrations
